TV streaming service
We're hooked on streaming television. More than 15 million households in the UK are subscribed to one of the three UK majors, according to Ofcom – Netflix, Amazon Prime and NOW TV – but with Disney+ muscling its way into the marketplace, which of the services is best? With so many to choose from, and with so many different deals, it can be hard to decide which is right for you.
If you have the cash, you can, of course, purchase ALL the streaming services and stay in bed for the rest of your life, watching EVERY SINGLE TV SERIES until there is nothing left to watch. It's certainly the right time for it, courtesy of the coronavirus pandemic. But, if you don't have the money (or the time, given that lots of us are still working), don't panic – we've tested all the services and found out what each is best for, helping you to decide what you should spend your money on.
Netflix currently has three subscription plans with different prices ranging from £5.99 for the basic package to £11.99 for the premium version the main differences being the availability of HD and the number of screens that you can watch on. Users can choose which contract is right for them, but each one requires a monthly payment. The top tier offering includes the ability to watch 4 screens at the same time and offers a 4K viewing option. Netflix also lets you set up profiles for adults and kids so that everyone gets suitable content.
Amazon Prime Video is £7.99 a month and also comes with free delivery for Amazon Prime purchases, music and photo storage. If you are already paying for Amazon Prime, make sure you get the most of the service by checking you use everything that’s included. In addition, Prime Student, a membership programme created especially for higher education students studying in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, offers a six-month trial of Amazon Prime as well as discounts and promotions. After your six-month trial, your membership will automatically renew into a paid Prime Student membership at a discounted rate of either £39/year or £3.99/month (50% off Amazon Prime).
Sky TV The basic package is from £22 a month but to get movies, sports and on demand there are extra costs — but it’s worth noting that Netflix is now included in the Ultimate On-Demand package. You can also get broadband and mobile from Sky and by doing all three you may be able to get a better deal than from three different providers.
Now TV gives you Sky programming but without a contract and you can pick and choose what bundles that you want. The Entertainment pass, which has just box sets and TV shows is £8.99 a month, the Cinema pass, with more than 1,000 movies, is £11.99 a month, Kids is £3.99 a month and Sport is from £5.99.
To get a taster Netflix, Now TV and Amazon have free trials — just make sure you cancel before the end of the trial so that you don’t get charged if you don’t want to keep the service. Use ApTap to cancel or switch with just a tap!
Now, this is all down to personal choice. Amazon, Netflix and Sky/Now TV all have their own original programming and this is where you need to look at all the other factors and work out what will give you what you want.
Netflix’s major selling point is its original TV shows, exclusive series that aren’t available anywhere else. It began with shows such as House of Cards, but now boasts everything from word-of-mouth hits like Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black to big-budget shows such as The Crown and intriguing documentaries.
Amazon have the Marvelous Mrs Maisel (a definite thumbs up from us!), Patriot and Good Omens and on Sky you have Tin Star, Riviera and Chernobyl. It’s worth checking out the individual programming lists to get the full details.
Get everyone in your household to jot down their top shows and see what the winners are to help make decisions.
